Help identify this please

Got this today at a new sawyer, he says maple. I would like a consensus if you have time. I am not from nc and have not seen local maple before, but in the Midwest it wasn't this red. Thanks

It may have been maple before the powder post beetles and fungus got to it.
It may be useful in a situation where those attributes are considered a visual asset.

Chris I'm not sure how to remove the pith.
That just means that you don’t want the center stuff. How dry is this? When was it cut? Was it in a kiln? Dry, it might be useful to someone who does scrollsaw work, just sayin’
